Everything above is measured, recorded and reviewed as presented on the day. It is not a mechanical inspection, engineering certification, suspension certification or a roadworthy inspection. Where trailers or complete towing combinations need assessing, the relevant trailer or combination service applies.
The people driving them are your responsibility
A work vehicle is a workplace. Under Australian work health and safety law, a business has a duty of care to provide plant and equipment that is safe for workers to use, so far as is reasonably practicable, and that includes the vehicles staff drive every day.
An overloaded vehicle handles, brakes and sits differently. Measured weights turn an assumption about how the fleet is loaded into a documented record you can act on and point to.
Duty of care and WHS
Work health and safety obligations extend to the vehicles your staff operate. Measured weights and axle loads give you evidence of what the vehicle is actually carrying, and a basis for deciding whether a load, a fitout or a tool allocation needs to change.
Insurance and workers compensation
Insurers, brokers and workers compensation schemes such as WorkCover assess incidents on the circumstances at the time. Documented vehicle weights can form part of your own risk management records. Requirements vary, so confirm what applies with your insurer or broker.
After an incident
Questions about vehicle loading tend to arrive after something has happened. A dated assessment report showing how each vehicle was measured, and what was done about it, is a far stronger position than an estimate from memory.

Two vehicles in the same fleet can look almost identical and operate at very different weights. Assessing each vehicle beats assuming every unit of the same model carries the same load.

Vehicle weights change over time
A fleet vehicle's operating weight is not static. Vehicles get heavier as tools are added, accessories are installed, storage changes, new electrical systems are fitted, stock levels shift, drivers carry different equipment and vehicle roles change.
Periodic reassessment gives the business an updated record of how the vehicles are operating. Some businesses fold weighing into a six or twelve month fleet review, based on their own operational, safety, compliance or insurance requirements.
This is an optional fleet-management practice rather than a prescribed interval. Confirm any specific requirements with your own insurer or broker.
